“…Inspired by a rereading of John Steinbeck’s Depr “…Inspired by a rereading of John Steinbeck’s Depression-era classic ‘The Grapes of Wrath,’ the lyrics survey a harrowing media landscape where ‘Advertisers sell Viagra and gold coins inbetween scenes of genocide from Palestine.’ Amidst jagged guitar licks and roiling rhythms, Rogers rails against the ‘rise of the Fourth Reich’ while confessing he’d rather be writing about the parts of America he loves and holds dear. As the track unfurls, he points his finger not at some nefarious group of evil individuals, but at the poisonous capitalist system that allows the powerful to prey on the poor and working class. It’s an important distinction because, as Rogers points out, it’s far more difficult to rally revolutionary action against something so faceless and nebulous.

“‘I knew I wanted this tune to be a ‘protest song,’ Rogers acknowledges. ‘I knew I wanted the chorus to sit opposite the verses in terms of negative/positive aspects of American culture, so the quote from the novel helped the lyrical transition. But in a larger sense, Steinbeck’s depiction of the bank as an amorphous evil made by men but wholly inhuman and feeding on greed really stuck with me. Recently I was reading some accounts of anti-war protest in the ‘60s/‘70s and the police who beat back protesters are often described similarly: an organism where each cell is man, yet the sum of these parts is some whole other thing we’ve lost control of.” - @latestdisgrace

If there’s a through line running through SMALL’s If there’s a through line running through SMALL’s latest Valentine’s single, it’s that love is messy, painful, and difficult. It fails more often than it succeeds. And no amount of corporatized Valentine’s Day propaganda can obscure that sobering truth. But that’s not the same thing as saying love should be avoided or abandoned. Instead, let SMALL’s latest serve as a warning: approach with caution and with your eyes—and heart—wide open.

Led by rapper Grip and featuring, among others, Gr Led by rapper Grip and featuring, among others, Grouplove members Daniel Gleason on bass and Ben Homola on drums, co-producer/engineer TJ Elias, and Josh Smith (a.k.a. Mallbangs) on guitar, Scattrbrain offers listeners a scintillating mix of earnest alt-rock, emo, and melodic punk.

“Take the band’s debut single, ‘Bombs Away.’ Against a jittery, noise-inflected groove, Grip traces the anxieties and inner turmoils that are causing his life to unravel. He does so with a mix of self-condescension and nervy desperation, each line exposing the widening fissures in his psyche. On the one hand it feels confessional, like an addict copping to all the pain and chaos they’ve caused. On the other, it’s intentionally ominous. ‘If I were you I’d run away / Take cover before I self destruct,’ he sings bluntly on the chorus, a line that doubles both as a warning and an acknowledgment that a collapse is imminent.

“‘My thought when making the song was to speak on a situation in which you are fully aware that you are on a self-destructive path and choose to embrace it instead of resolving the issue,’ Grip explains over email. ‘Doubling down on self sabotage. Fuck it…Bombs Away!‘“ - @latestdisgrace

“As the lead track from his forthcoming EP, ‘Flowers for Inez’ sets a dazzling tone. The song refuses to sit still for long, shifting ably through a flurry of sounds and styles. Much of the record’s music is said to be informed by Chisenhall’s embrace of steel guitars (hence the pun-y title ‘Be Steel, My Heart’). Here, it arrives in the form of an airy pedal steel that gently propels the bridge as its guides the track to its ultimate denouement. It’s a subtle yet vital touch, one that highlights Chisenhall’s deft instincts as a songwriter.

“Written, directed, and edited by RUBNOGS with production design and animation by B1G REV, the video plays out like an apocalyptic fever dream. In it, a power-wielding pug known as the pugmaster commands a sax-playing Death to stop Chisenhall from performing in order to prevent planetary doom. As the action unfolds, there is a graveyard standoff, a wild bicycle chase sequence, global destruction, and… well, you should probably just watch it for yourself. Suffice it say that before all is said and done, Chisenhall’s transcendence is nullified before he finally enters the divine realm and unveils a time-altering secret. It’s all a bit mad, which, according to RUBNOGS, is a natural result of the process…” - @latestdisgrace

“The ease with which ‘Nothing Feels Right’ glides “The ease with which ‘Nothing Feels Right’ glides across your speakers is slyly disarming. The new single from Atlanta newcomers Sleepers Club wastes no time in making its presence felt, enveloping the listener in a warm haze of undulating shoegaze guitars. As an introduction, it’s not so much a tap on the shoulder as it is an arms-wide bear hug. The playing is lithe and loose—especially that loping backbeat—but the resulting tractor beam pull is both undeniable and yet strangely reassuring.

“You *could* call it a summertime banger. More specifically, I think, it’s an end-of-summer anthem. Since her days leading Sydney Eloise and the Palms, Sydney Ward’s voice (and by extension, her music) has managed to engender a kind of shimmering, sun-drenched aura. And while that remains true for the most part in Sleepers Club, you can also hear autumn’s longer shadows beginning to intercede. As her vocals sashay over the cascading wall of guitars, you can’t help but feel an air of melancholy settling in. Yeah, you may be cruising with the radio blasting and the windows down, but you’re feeling far more pensive than carefree.” - @latestdisgrace
